3 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp baking powder (if lumpy, shift through a fine mesh sieve)
1 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
¾ tsp cream of tarter (if lumpy, shift through a fine mesh sieve)
¾ cup butter
1¼ cup buttermilk
Milk for brushing (optional)

Preheat oven to 450º

In large bowl combine flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and ceam of tarter. Ussing a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles course crumbs. Make a well in center of the flour mixture. Add buttermilk all at once. Using a fork, stir mixture just until moistened.

Turn dough out onto to a lightly floured surface. knead dough by folding and gently pressing it just until the dough holds together. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Pat dough into a ¾ inch thick rectangle. Cut into 12 squares or rectangles with a knife or pizza cutter. Do not separate.

If desired, brush with milk. Bake 10 to 14 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.
