Coat the meat with flour and brown in the fat (I use london broil or sirloin cut in bite size pieces) until it's nice and brown. Funny story behind this recipe. When Ed and i married I was not much of a cook. I made beef stew how I thought my mom made it which was almost every veggie possible. One day I sent the leftovers to work with Ed and he brought the whole container back home. I asked him why he didn't eat lunch and he reluctantly said "I really don't like this beef stew I like my mom's" so once I made it I totally understood why. It's the best beef stew I have ever had. I definitely like more cloves and worcestershire sauce than in the recipe. We have it with corn bread.
