1 T oleo
1 small onion sliced
1 carrot
1 c cubed leftover ham
1 qt water
1 c split peas rinsed well
1-2 inch bay leaf
½ t salt
⅛ t pepper

Directions:
Directions:
Cut carrot in half lengthwise and then cut into ¼ inch slices. In medium sized saucepan, melt butter on moderately high heat. Add onion, carrot and ham. Cook, stirring often, until lightly browned. Add water, split peas, bay leaf, salt and pepper. Bring to boil and reduce heat to moderate. Cover and cook stirring occasionally until peas have disintegrated about 45 minutes.
