3/4 cup Crisco shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup dark molasses, less 2 teaspoons
1 large egg
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. baking soda
Dash of nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
In large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar. Add molasses and egg; beat well. Sift together flour, soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and salt. Add to creamed mixture; mix well. Cover and chill. Form into 1 inch balls. Roll each in sugar and place on greased or parchment lined cookie sheet about 2” apart. Bake at 375ºF for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand on sheet for 1 minute and then remove to wire rack. Cool. Makes about 4 dozen. Note: For Christmas, you can dip half of cookie in melted white chocolate and pipe on red colored chocolate holly berries and green colored chocolate holly leaves.
