"As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy, and to make plans."--Ernest Hemingway

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1/2 c. chopped onion
1 1/2 c. raw brown rice
1 c. fresh shelled or frozen whole green peas
1 c. dry split peas
2 tbsp. butter
1 c. grated parmesan cheese (or cheese of choice)
soy sauce or miso to taste (I use miso and dissolve about 1 tbsp. into a c. of hot water) then add to pot with everything else
1/4 c. nutritional yeast flakes (optional)
Spike sprinkled on your steaming bowl when finished

Directions:
Directions:
Saute onions and rice in a small amount of butter or oil until onions are transparent. Stir constantly adding more oil as needed. Stir in water (1.5 quarts depending on size of pot and how much you will be making) and dry split peas. Bring to a boil, lower heat, cover and simmer until split peas and rice are soft. Add fresh or frozen whole green peas and dissolved miso (miso does not like to be boiled). Heat through and stir. Add cheese and nutritional yeast flakes. With a large spoon, ladle hot, steaming mixture into generous bowls and sprinkle with Spike (a seasoning in a small shaker jar from your grocery store) if desired.

Personal Notes:
This recipe is from Recipes for a Small Planet, I bought my original copy at Walnut Acres in 1982. When that copy fell apart I bought another copy in 2002. Traditionally I used my large black cast iron pot.
