Personal Notes:
This is a traditional (read old) recipe from the depression era and before. Your Great-Grandmother Caroline Cobb (Grandma Lois Cobb - Lenz's mother) made this as her go-to cake. It is a very moist, heavy cake with amazing flavor.
The sour cream she used was not the commercial sour cream you get in the store.
To make this the traditional way, you'll need real heavy cream (raw is best) store bought works too. You need to leave it out on the counter for it to ripen.
To make cultured sour cream, Add 1/4 c. cultured buttermilk, [cultured yogurt or kefir] to 4 c. heavy whipping cream. Put in a glass jar and cover with cheesecloth or muslin. Let sit on the counter overnight or up to 24 hrs. It should be tangy and thick. And Viola' sour cream! {Buttermilk freezes well for later uses. It keeps it's culture in the freezer if you don't nuke it to thaw!}
