Ingredients:
Ingredients:
8 c flour
2 tbsp. anise seed
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp yeast
2 tsp vegetable oil (not olive)
3 c cold water
anise flavor (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Roll anise seeds lightly with a rolling pin to release oils. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Knead until dough forms, cut into small balls, roll out strips about 7 inches long. Form tarales into circles. Drop into boiling water a few at a time and allow to rise to the top. Leave enough room in the pot to rise and not overlap too much. Place boiled tarales on a cloth or rack to dry till stickiness is gone. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes.
They will get hard as a rock. That's the way they should be. Best to dip in hot coffee or tea while enjoying this age old treat.

Personal Notes:
Aunt Boops remembers how the priest at church, Father Gambone, especially loved these. He said he would chomp on them while waiting in the church confessional for someone to come and confess their sins. He had a lot of lonely time locked up in there and really enjoyed having Gram's tarales to munch on and pass the time. Funny......
Cousin Rich Malozi adds that he feels gram developed her arm muscles making these for the bulk of a day. Also adds a WARNING!!!! These tarales have caused severe injury to the inexperienced eater. There is the risk of an occasional eye injury or broken tooth!
