"The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found."--Calvin Trillin

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening (Crisco)
6 eggs
4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Beat Crisco and sugar until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder. Gradually add to butter mixture, beating after each addition.
Although this recipe doesn't state this, I'd go ahead and make into S shapes by breaking off pieces and rolling to form ropes, then twisting into s shapes.
Recipe says to place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 375º for 10-11 minutes. (She indicated closer to 11). Recipe doesn't state anything about icing, but I'd try dipping in glaze and adding sprinkles if desired.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Wanted to add this as it goes back a couple generations to Grandma Garruto's mother. There were no directions on what to do with batter other than temp and time but assuming this is her S shaped cookie recipe (biscoti). S cookies tend to be dry but are good with coffee or milk! Have made Grandma G's recipe but not this one.
