1 cup shortening (Crisco)
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk (to make sour milk add 1 tbsp. vinegar, stir
just once and set aside until thick and curdled looking, about 5 minutes)
1 3/4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
3 cups QUICK cooking oats (Grandma Garruto put in blender and pulsed
several times to partially pulverize; said she prefers it that way)
1 cup raisins, plumped by setting in hot water for 5 minutes, then drained)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Cream shortening, sugar, and egg together until light and fluffy. Stir in buttermilk or sour milk. Sift dry ingredients and stir into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, drained raisins, and nuts. Drop by tbsp. 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet (I'd recommend lining with parchment paper before dropping cookies onto sheet). Bake 375º about 8-10 minutes.
