1 c. shortening (I use butter flavored Crisco baking sticks)
1 c. sugar
1 whole egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. almond extract
Dry ingredients: 2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. each: salt, baking soda and cream of tartar

Cream together the shortening, sugar and egg. Stir together dry ingredients and add slowly to mixture:
Take about a tablespoon of dough and roll into a 1 inch ball, then drop onto an ungreased cookie sheet, flatten with a fork. Bake at 325 degrees for 8-10 minutes. ( Cookies will not be browned, just dry on edges). Sprinkle with colored sugar or sprinkles while still hot. Cool completely and store in a covered tin. Dough can be shaped into 1 1/2 inch rolls and /or frozen, then sliced thinly and baked. The recipe makes 2 doz. large or 1 1/2 doz. smaller cookies.

The original recipe for these cookies noted that girls attending Baylor University before 1900 served these cookies along with lemonade to their "visiting beaus" on Sunday afternoons.
