1 lb sweet Italian sausage
3/4 lb lean ground beef
1/2 c minced onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes
2 6-oz cans tomato paste
2 6.5-oz cans tomato sauce
1/2 c water
2 T white sugar
1 1/2 tsp dried basil leaves
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 T salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
4 T chopped fresh parsley
12 lasagna noodles
16 oz ricotta cheese
1 egg
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 lb Mozzarella cheese, sliced
3/4 c grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
Directions:
In Dutch oven, cook sausage, ground beef, onion and garlic over medium heat till well browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce and water. Season with sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, 1 T salt, pepper and 2 T fresh parsley. Simmer, covered, for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Bring large pot of water to boil. Cook lasagna noodles 8-10 minutes. Drain and rinse in cold water.

In mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, remaining parsley and 1/2 tsp. salt.

Preheat oven to 375º.

Assemble:
1 1/2 c meat sauce in 9x13 pan
layer of noodles
1/2 ricotta mixture
1/3 Mozzarella cheese, then 1/3 Parmesan cheese
Repeat
Cover with oiled foil.

Bake 25 minutes, remove foil and bake 25 more minutes. Cool 15 minutes before serving.
