Cake:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg, beaten
1 tsp. pure vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts. (opt)
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup boiling water
1 cup chopped dates

Topping:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup 10% cream
Mix all topping ingredients in small pot, and boil for 3 minutes.

Once cake is out of oven, poke several holes in cake with toothpick. spread topping over and sprinkle with nuts.

Prepare 12 X 9 inch pan for baking. Lightly grease and flour.

Pour 1 cup boiling water over chopped dates and add 1 tsp. baking soda. Let stand while the following is mixed.
Beat sugar and butter together. And egg and continue beating. until smooth. Add vanilla.

Mix together all the dry ingredients. Add to the wet mixture nd blend together. Add the date mixture .

Bake at 350ºF for 35 minutes.
