Small strip of orange peel

Small squeeze of orange juice

Directions:
Muddle sugar, small section of orange peel, and a few splashes of bitters with a small amount of water (just enough to water the ingredients). Add ice, then add whiskey, aquavit, and a small squeeze of fresh orange juice.

Stir well with ice, and then strain over a large rock in a separate rocks glass. Garnish with a strip of orange peel. Enjoy.

Personal Notes:
The Icelandic Old Fashioned is a spin on a traditional Old Fashioned. The addition of aquavit* gives this standard a bit of a kick, plus the step of adding a bit of orange peel to your muddle gives it a nice orange undertone. You can adjust the sweetness by increasing the sugar or adding a bit more squeezed orange. I like to put the sugar in the glass first, then give enough dashes of bitters to turn the sugar about 50% red. After you have muddled and added your whiskey and aquavit, give it a good stir to mix the sugar…you do not want the finished drink to contain sugar crystals.

*Aquavit is a Scandinavian liquor. You can order it at most better liquor stores.
