2 cups sugar
2/3 cups cocoa
2/3 cups shortening
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons salt
2 cups buttermilk

This is a double recipe - cut in half for a 8 inch square cake

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl by hand! Pour into a greased/floured 9" square cake pan for 1/2 a recipe or a 9 x 12 for a double recipe.

Bake at 350º for 25 to 30 minutes (test with a toothpick in the middle).

This is my Grandma Lutz's chocolate cake recipe from WWII. It is unique because it does not use eggs. Eggs were in short supply and rationed during WWII so she created this recipe. Grandma would make this cake almost everyday. It was always a treat when Grandma was staying at our house to come home from school in the afternoon to have a slice of this warm cake fresh out of the oven. By the way, Grandma very rarely frosted this cake, she would sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top when it came out of the over - yummy! You can frost it if desired.
