1/2 c shortening
1 1/2 c sugar
2 eggs
1/4 c red food coloring (1 1/2 oz bottle)
2 heaping T cocoa
1 c buttermilk
2 1/4 c cake flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp soda
1 tsp vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º.
Grease and flour 2 8" round cake pans.
Bake 24-30 minutes.

1. Cream shortening, sugar, and eggs.
2. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa.
3. Add buttermilk alternately with flour and salt.
4. Add vanilla and blend.
5. Add soda to vinegar separately (hold container over bowl as it foams).
6. Add soda and vinegar mixture to cake, blending, not beating.

7. Pour batter into 2 8" greased and floured round cake pans.
8. Bake at 350º for 24-30 minutes.
