"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is an old recipe! My mom Vail used to brag about her mother's chili. Her stepmom, Fern found the recipe and mailed it to her. I still have that actual card she mailed with the recipe written in her handwriting. So some things were not exactly specified, like how much onion. Also, it says to cook the beef in "Spry" a brand of shortening they used back in the day. In the interest of health, I omitted the shortening and included draining off the fat. So this recipe may not be as tasty (we all know how good fat tastes) as Grandma Alice's, but it won't clog your arteries as quickly.
