3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening. Gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add egg and molasses. Mix well.

Combine flour, soda, cinnamon, salt, ginger and cloves. Mix well. Add about 1/4 of dry mixture at a time to creamed mixture, mixing until smooth after each addition. Chill 1 hour.

Roll dough into 1-inch balls, and roll in sugar. Place 2 inches a part on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375º for 10 minutes. (Tops will crack).
