1 c. butter or margarine
2/3/c. sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. almond extract
2 3/4 c. sifted flour
Frosting
2 c. sifted confectionary sugar
2 tbsp. milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
Red food coloring

In a bowl cream the butter thoroughly; gradually add the sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add salt, vanilla, and almond extract. Add sifted flour, blend well.
Chill for about 20 minutes. Roll small portions of dough out on a lightly floured board to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with a heart shaped cookie cutter(2 1/2 inches). Placed on ungreased baking sheets two inches apart. Bake in a 375 degree oven until golden. Remove to racks to cool while preparing the frosting.
Combine the sifted confectionary sugar, milk, and vanilla thoroughly; add food coloring until desired shade is obtained. Spread evenly over the top of each cookie.

Mom says she uses this recipe and no other for cut out cookies. Any shape cutter can be used and vary the color for the season.
This recipe is a great memory for us. We would see these frosted cookies in a clear glass jar and would want to eat them all in one sitting. Good loving in this recipe.
