Ingredients:
Ingredients:
4 C flour
2 sticks butter (1/2 lb)
1/2 teas salt
2 T sugar
1 pkg yeast
1 lb walnuts, ground
4 eggs, well beaten
1 C sugar
1/2 C water
pinch of cloves
juice of 1/2 lemon
1 egg yolk beaten with 1 T water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix flour, butter, and salt as if for pie crust. Dissolve yeast in water and add it, the 2 T sugar and eggs to dough. Mix well. Original recipe calls for you to roll into balls the size of walnuts and refrigerate for a couple of hours. To make it easier, we just take a good handful of dough and roll out thin. Cut into rectangles or circles -- about 4" Spread filling on each and roll up. Curve like a horseshoe. Swish with egg yolk and water mixture. Bake on cookie sheet about 20 minutes in 350 degree oven.

Filling: Cook sugar, water, cloves, and lemon juice to make a syrup (until sugar is dissolved). Add ground nuts and mix. Cool.

Personal Notes:
This is a recipe that my Grandma Schubert (Anna Schubert) brought to the U.S. from Austria Hungary. She made hers very small -- about the size of her little finger. We are not quite so patient and make them larger. I have never found another recipe like hers although I have found quite a few recipes that were similar. None of them have the filling that this one does.
