Nanny's Texas Beef Stew Recipe

2 lb. Round or Sirloin Steak

2 large onions

1 c. water

1 c. white vinegar

1/2 c. ketchup

2 t. chili powder

dash of tobasco

3 bay leaves

2T. worcestershire sauce

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 t. pepper

2 t. salt


flour or cornstarch & water (optional)

Directions:
Cut steak into strips about 2" wide. Slice onions. Place meat and onions in a large zip-top bag or glass dish. Stir remaining ingredients together in a bowl then pour over steak & onions. Refrigerate overnight.

Remove steak from marinade (Do Not discard marinade). In a large skillet on medium-high heat, sear steak. Pour marinade and onions over the top. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat & simmer 1 hour OR cook on low in crockpot for 5-6 hours. Thicken gravy with flour & water or cornstarch, if desired. Serve with mashed potatoes on the side.

This is absolutely my favorite main dish Nanny would make. She had cut the original recipe out of Better Homes & Gardens in 1943. I have adapted it based on the way we have made it for the last 10 years or so.
