Ingredients:
Ingredients:
4 apples - peeled, cored & cut
3 c. water
1 box raisins
2 or 3 tbsp. shortening
1 tbsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ginger
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. salt
************************************************
1/2 c. oatmeal
4, 6 or 8 c. flour
1 or 2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. soda
1/3 c. cocoa
1 c. large gum drops sliced
1 c. walnuts
1/2 container of jellied fruit cake fruits

Directions:
Directions:
Simmer the first 10 ingredients until apples are soft. Mix in the remaining ingredients with the cooked ingredients. Bake at a very low temperature (about 275º). Cook 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Notes - The amount of flour you use will be determined by how juicy your apples are. The batter should be a little thicker than cake batter but not as thick as cookie dough. (Like banana bread batter.) Also, Grandma Bruderer just said to cook it lower than 300º. Somewhere between 250º and 275º is about right. Do not let it burn!

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Delbert Bruderer always loved his mother's fruit cake. As a young wife, I wanted to learn how to make this favorite Christmas treat for him. So I followed my Mother-in-Law (Anna Bruderer around the kitchen asking questions, and getting answers such as "A pinch of salt." "A few handfuls of flour." " Bake it under 300 degrees," etc. Well, wanting to make it correctly, I finally got the idea to measure everything she did. I spent one day following her around the kitchen, trying to measure the ingredients for this Fruit Cake. As a tradition, I have made Delbert his fruit cake every year for Christmas, and sometimes for Father's Day. When he trapped, it was one of his favorite things to take on the river as a quick snack. I always tried to make the Fruit Cake as a surprise for him. Oh, yes.... He knew that more than likely he would have some for Christmas, but I tried to time baking it while he was out and about, so that he wouldn't be expecting it, or knew that I made it. We like surprises at our home, and with Delbert, there are a lot of surprises!! Now I have a grandson that requests fruit cake for his Birthday, as well as a foster Indian Son who likes it as well!! This is not the typical yucky Fruit Cake, it is a really good recipe! Enjoy!
