2 c. sifted flour
1/8 tsp. salt

Directions:
Dough:
Cream butter, sugars, vanilla, salt and egg until light and fluffy. Add sifted dry ingredients ; flour & baking soda and mix well. Chill until firm.

Filling:
In a small pot combine the cut up date pieces, sugar, dash of salt and 1/3 c. of water. Simmer 5 min. and cool. Then add 1 c. chopped walnuts.

Use half of the dough at a time to roll out on a lightly floured surface. Roll out to about the size of a pie pan. (Mom often would roll out the dough between 2 pieces of waxed paper sheets, also lightly floured.) She says not to "over handle" the dough because it will get sticky and soft when warm. So work quickly. Then spread half the filling across the dough sheet and roll up. Her trick to keeping them round was to place log on wax paper & place in cardboard tube. Repeat with the other half of dough & filling. Refrigerate or freeze until ready to bake.
Bake at 350 º for 10 min. or lite brown. Store in airtight container.

Personal Notes:
These were Tim's favorite Christmas cookie and mom would bake a special stash of the Date & Nut treasures just for him.
