1 c. shortening (Grandma used 1/2 lard, 1/2 butter)
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla or lemon (to taste)
1 c. sour milk
5 c. flour or enough to make dough stiff enough to handle

Directions:

Sift the first 4 ingredients together and set aside. Cream the remainder of ingredients, all but sour milk. Then fold in dry ingredients with the sour milk. Chill several hours or overnight before rolling out. Roll, cut and bake at 375º for about 10 minutes or until light tan. You can make filled cookies with this recipe also.
