1/2 cup milk
2 Tbsp flour
pinch of salt

1/2 cup granulated white sugar
1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Add the four, milk and salt in a sauce pan -- heat and stir until thick.
Put into a mixing bowl and put in the refrigerator until COLD

Add sugar, shortening and vanilla and beat with electric mixer until no sugary taste.
Could be 7 minutes, or more.

This is a pre WWII recipe of our mom, Genevieve Patton Rubino. I think she got this from someone she worked with on the Ration Board. As kids, Terri and I loved this stuff. Mom would top a mayonnaise cake, that she did in the "tube" pan, with this white fluffy frosting.
Oh..the memories.

Here's another one:
Whipped Cream Frosting
(very stable/won't melt at room temp)
1 8oz pkg cream cheese - reduced fat - softened
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tsp almond extract
Mix on medium speed until smooth. While running, slowly add:
2 cups heavy cream
Scrape bowl continue til cream can hold a stiff peak.
