3/4 cup shortening
1 3/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup milk
3 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
4 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla

Icing:
2 cups light brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tbsp shortening or butter
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar together.

Then add milk alternately with the sifted dry ingredients.

Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites to which vanilla has been added. Stir well, but do not beat.

Bake at 350º for 25-30 minutes.

Icing:

Cook sugar, salt, and milk together. Stir until all lumps are dissolved, then remove from heat.

Add the shortening and cook to 110º.

Beat hard until it will hold shape on cake. Add vanilla.

If desired decorate with pecan or walnut halves.
