Sugar and spice Sauce:
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup butter

Pastry
2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk

6 jonathon or granny smith apples

Directions:
Directions:
To make sauce:
Combine 2 cups sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a saucepan and cook 5 min. Remove from flame and add 1/2 cup butter.

To make dough:
Sift flour, salt, and baking powder.
Cut in shortening.
Add milk and stir until moistened.
Roll 1/4 inch thick and cut into 6 squares.

Pare and core apples and place one into the center of each square.
Sprinkle with additional sugar and spice and dot with butter.
Bring up corners of pastry and pinch edges together firmly.
Place 1 inch apart in well greased baking disk and pour sauce over all.
Bake in a moderately hot 375 degree oven for 45 min basting frequently.
Serve warm.

cooking shows, plus a newspaper cooking column back in the 50's. Some of
her recipes are legendary.Mom learned to cook from watching her show.
