¾ cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 ½ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Mix well butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Measure and blend flour, baking powder and salt; stir in. Chill at least 1 hour. Heat oven to 400 F. Roll 1/8” thick on floured board. Cut with cookie cutters. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 6-8 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen.

The key to this holiday staple is to roll the dough thin. It says 1/4 inch but really go a little thinner than that, which is my mom's secret to the perfect sugar cookie. We do these in steps: mix one day and chill, roll out to cut and cook the next, and let them sit out to decorate the following. What's especially nice about these is that the whole family can gather to decorate them.
