2/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. grated orange peel
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
4 tsp. milk
2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

Directions:
Directions:
Thoroughly cream shortening, sugar, orange peel, and vanilla. Add egg; beat till light and fluffy. Stir in milk. Sift together dry ingredients; blend in creamed mixture. Divide dough in half so it will chill more evenly. Chill one hour.

On lightly floured surface, roll to 1/8 inch. Cut in desired shapes with cutters. Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375º F about 6 to 8 minutes. Cool slightly; remove from pan. Cool on rack. Decorate with icing and candy sprinkles. Makes 2 dozen cookies.

Icing:
2 cups confectioner's powdered sugar
1 tbsp. butter, softened
2 tbsp. orange juice
Mix the butter and sugar together in a bowl and add orange juice until you have the consistency you want. Separate into cups or small bowls for red, green, yellow, and white icing. Use standard food colors.

This recipe is from the Betty Crocker Cookbook and it serves as our basic Christmas cookie. Use Christmas cookie cutters in season and be careful with the tiny reindeer legs. Use Red Hots for Rudolph's nose.
