Cookies:

2 cups butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
4 1/2 cups sifted flour

Icing:

2 egg whites
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
Dash of salt
2 tsps. vanilla
2 cups confectioner's sugar
Food coloring
Decorative items including sprinkles, small bits of dried fruit, small candy.

For Cookies:

Cream butter and sugar.
Blend in vanilla and egg.
Gradually add flour.
Refrigerate at least 2 hours.

Bake at 375 degrees for 6-9 minutes.

For Icing:

Beat egg whites, cup of cream of tartar, and salt.
Stir in vanilla.
Gradually beat in sugar.
Divide into three small bowls.
Add Christmas colors by dropping in food coloring...red, green, and white...one color for each bowl.
Frost cooled cookies with the icing, then add decorative items. Cutting cardboard templates for Christmas trees, candy canes, and other seasonal choices will facilitate the decorating,
