Ingredients:
Ingredients:
Mix in:
1/4 C. raisins - soaked in 2 tbsp water (directions say at least 2 hours but I don't think I've ever soaked them for that long - I always forget until I'm ready to make the bread!)

Dough:
1/2 C. milk
1/4 C. water
1 egg
3 C. flour (bread flour preferred)
1/3 C. sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp ground cardamom
1/4 C. (1/2 stick) butter
3 1/2 tsp. dry yeast

Topping:
1 egg, beaten
Sugar, preferably Swedish Pearl Sugar (available at IKEA)

Directions:
Directions:
I make the dough in my bread machine on the large dough setting. The directions are for that method. If not using a bread machine, prepare dough as you would any yeast bread.

Place all dough ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed. On my machine I select SWEET DOUGH cycle, large. The machine beeps after 15 minutes and then add in the raisins. Let machine complete the dough cycle (on my machine this takes 1 hour and 35 minutes).

Grease cookie sheet, Divide dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into 20-inch rope on lightly floured surface. Place ropes next to each other on the cookie sheet, Braid gently and form loosely into a circle. Press ends together to fasten. Cover; let rise in warm place 1 to 1 1/4 hours or until almost double.

Heat oven to 350. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This coffee bread has become a tradition for my family to eat on Christmas morning, with our coffee, while opening gifts. It started with me buying the bread through a VASA lodge member. When that was no longer an option, I decided to make my own. The first few years were experimental. (The first year I forgot to set the machine on the dough cycle and suddenly realized the dough was baking in the machine!) I also experimented with the amount of cardamom, so if you find that my amount is too much, just reduce it accordingly.
