ham bone with some meat on
2-3 pounds ham, cut into pieces
3-1# bags green split peas
3 1/2 quarts water
3 medium yellow onions, sliced
2 c. celery stalks and tops, chopped
1 1/2 c. sliced fresh mushrooms
2 c. sliced carrots
1 medium potato
pinch sugar
1 T. salt
1 1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 small rutabaga, grated

Directions:
put all ingredients in large pot. Stir. Turn save on med. high with lid off. bring to boil. reduce heat to low and put cover on pot, set ajar. stir occasionally and simmer on low for about 3 hours. the soup is done when it is thick and lumpy and a wooden spoon stands up in the middle without falling over. Cool to room temperature and place in refrigerator for 24 hours. This recipe freezes well. Place in zip lock bags or freezer containers and enjoy!
