Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 cup soft shortening/oleo
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
Red food coloring

Directions:
Directions:
Mix in order. Tint 1/2 the dough red and leave rest white. Take one teaspoon of each color and roll 4"long and twist and shape into a candy cane shape. Bake at 375 for 7 - 8 minutes. These are fragile so you will be forced to eat many broken cookies that aren't presentable for the cookie plate.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
A "Vintage" recipe from Aunt Marilyn Irwin Riordan. If you don't like the idea of shortening and replace it with butter, the cookie will be tastier and a bit healthier, but will also spread a lot when baked.
