1 cup butter or 2 sticks,butter or margarine
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 package semisweet chocolate pieces
2 cups walnuts or pecans, optional

Preheat oven to 375"F In large bowl with mixer at medium speed, cream butter with sugars.Beat in eggs, and vanilla until well mixed, occasionally scraping bowl, Stir in flour, salt and baking soda until well mixed. Stir in chocolate pieces and nuts. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart on cookie sheets.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes until cookies are lightly browned. Immediately remove cookies to wire racks, cool.
