1/2 c shortening
1/2 c butter
2 c white sugar
2 c brown sugar
4 eggs
5 1/2 to 6 c flour
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. anise oil OR 2 tsp. anise extract
1/2 c nuts (optional)
1 T soda dissolved in 1 T hot water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, butter, and sugars first. Then beat with mixer; 1 egg at a time, mix well. Sift flour, cream of tartar, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, & cloves 3 times. Add flour mixture 1 cup at a time. Add nuts (optional) and extract. Roll dough into small long rolls, wrap in saran wrap, put in freezer overnight or until ready to bake. Slice thing, bake 5 minutes at 350º
