1/2 cup soft shortening (part butter)
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sifted flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup oats
2 tablespoons hot water

Optional: Add glazed red and green cherries, chopped pecans, and chopped walnuts.

Measure shortening and butter into mixing bowl. Sift together flour, salt, nutmeg, and baking soda. Cream shortening until fluffy. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, mixing until creamy. Add dry ingredients, oats, and hot water, combining thoroughly.

Chill dough for 1/2 to 1 hour.

Drop chilled dough from teaspoon 2" apart, onto greased cookie sheet. Press down with tines of fork. Press a second time so that creases are at right angles to those first made. To prevent fork from sticking to dough, dip in warm water or in flour.

Bake at 375º for 5 to 6 minutes. Remove cookies from pan. Place on wire cake rack to cool.
