Directions:
Preheat oven to 325º.
Mix sugar and shortening, then add eggs and sour milk.
Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
When batter is mixed well and thick, add the hot water. Then add nuts.
Bake for 45 minutes in either a 9x13 inch pan or 2 -8 or 9 inch round or square pans. You can tell when it is ready when it has pulled from the sides and toothpick in the center come out clean.
Frost with a chocolate frosting of your choice. I usually use a powdered sugar, butter and cocoa frosting.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This cake has been a special dessert for our family forever. Grandma Barsotti was given this recipe from a neighbor boy when she was young. Her mother thought it was a mistake to add the hot water to the batter but that was correct. It can be made with an electric mixer or be mixed by hand. The texture is coarser when mixed by hand. and finer when mixed by machine.
