1 1/2 c. evaporated milk
Scant 2 c. sugar
2 1/2 oz. unsweetened chocolate
2 1/2 "5 Cent" Hershey's bars [about 1 oz. each]
1/4 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt, opt.

Heat milk and sugar in a heavy saucepan but do not boil it. Add chocolate and butter. When all is melted, remove from heat and add in vanilla. Beat hard with a hand beater.

Another of the recipes from Grandma's old green tin recipe box. I was wondering how big a 5-cent chocolate bar used to be, so we Googled images of the vintage wrappers. Apparently the Hershey's bars changed sizes quite often but ran just over or just under an ounce in the 1960's and '70's.
