4 cups cooked turnips, mashed
1 cup well drained applesauce
¼ cup butter
¼ cup brown sugar
Salt
Nutmeg
Pepper
½ cup fine bread crumbs
¼ cup chopped nuts (optional)
2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:
Directions:
Heat together turnips and applesauce. Add sugar and butter. Season with salt, nutmeg and pepper. Turn into a shallow casserole dish and top with a mixture of the bread crumbs, nuts and melted butter. Broil until top is lightly browned.

Personal Notes:
May use cornflake crumbs, Rice Crispie crumbs instead of bread crumbs. This casserole may be made ahead of time and frozen, or kept refrigerated for a couple of days and then reheated through. June makes this on special occasions. May substitute frozen turnip or butternut squash.
