Cookies:
3/4 cup shortening or lard
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. almond extract (unless making for Martin and Jane)
2 1/4 cups sifted flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

Frosting:
1 lb. confectioners sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/8 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3-4 Tbsp. milk
3 heaping Tbsp. cocoa

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375ºF.
Cookies:
1. Cream shortening and sugar well. Add eggs and extract. Gradually add in dry ingredients.
2. Fill cookie press, using star design (or roll and slide into 1/4 inch thick disks.
3. Place on very lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.
4. Cool completely before frosting.

Butter Cream Frosting:
1. Beat together all ingredients and using pastry bag with star tip (or pastry knife) decorate cooled cookies.
