1 cup yellow peas
1 quart sauerkraut
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup chopped onion
4 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour

Directions:
Directions:
Soak washed peas in water for several hours or overnight. Cook in water until tender, about 1 hour. Keep adding water to prevent burning. Rinse the sauerkraut in water. Place in sauce pan and cook for about 1 hour, adding salt and pepper to taste. In the meantime, brown the onion in butter until browned. Add the flour. Stir in 1 cup of cold water and mix until smooth. Add the sauerkraut and peas.

This dish was traditionally part of the Christmas Eve Polish dinner, but not too many people like it. It complements the rest of the meatless dinner which includes pickled herring, cream of mushroom soup, fish, boiled potatoes, pierogis and of course, wafer!
