"The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found."--Calvin Trillin

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1/2 c. butter
1 square (1 oz.) unsweetened chocolate
1/4 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg, beaten
2 c. graham cracker crumbs (about 24 squares)
1 c. shredded coconut
1/2 c. finely chopped nuts
1/4 c. butter
1 T. milk or cream
2 c. sifted confectioner's sugar (powdered sugar)
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Directions:
*Since some of the ingredients repeat, use in the order listed above.
Melt 1/2 cup butter and 1 square chocolate in saucepan over low heat or in double boiler. Blend sugar, vanilla, egg, crumbs, coconut, and nuts into chocolate mixture. Mix well. Press into baking pan 11 1/2 x 7 1/2. Refrigerate.
Blend 1/4 cup butter, milk, confectioner's sugar, and vanilla. Spread over chilled crumb mixture. Refrigerate again.
Melt chocolate chips and spread evenly over well-chilled filling. Refrigerate again.
Cut into squares before completely firm.
Makes 3 - 4 dozen squares.

*Sometimes Grandma Carraher substituted vanilla frosting for butter/milk/sugar middle mixture and chocolate frosting for melted chocolate chip top layer, when she was in a pinch. Not as good, but got the job done!

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Mom (Grandma Carraher) made these delicious bar cookies occasionally. Once she made them for a Christmas party with their Sunday school class at Beavercreek Church of the Nazarene in Ohio, and she won the 1st place trophy. Grandpa still has the trophy at his house. She told me it was the only trophy she ever won.
