Directions:
MIX SHORTENINGS, THEN ADD SUGAR, EGGS AND VANILLA.
COMBINE DRY INGREDIENTS AND ADD TO SHORTENING/EGG MIXTURE. CHILL AT LEAST ONE HOUR OR OVERNIGHT.
ROLL OUT fairly thin, ON FLOURED SURFACE. CUT OUT DESIRED SHAPES.
BAKE ON UN-GREASED COOKIE SHEET
400 DEGREES 4-5 MINUTES, UNTIL EDGES JUST START TO BROWN SLIGHTLY ON THE EDGE, tops will still be white. DON’T OVER BAKE OR THEY WILL BE CRISP. Watch closely. DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM!
REMOVE FROM PAN cool on PAPER TOWELS AND FROST.

FROSTING: POWDERED SUGAR, A LITTLE MILK AND A LITTLE VANILLA, A LITTLE SOFT BUTTER, MIX UNTIL SPREADING CONSISTENCY. Add more powdered sugar if it is too runny and more milk if too thick. And add food coloring if you want colors

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Granny says....What Christmas would be complete without these sugar cookies?! Can’t begin to guess how many batches of these I have made through the years.... Got this recipe from an old Betty Crocker Cooky book dated 1963.....Everyone always loved these. And they are always pretty fool-proof.
