1/2 c. crisco
2 sticks butter, softened
1 Tbsp. cocoa
2 oz. red food coloring
2 tsp. vanilla extract
4 eggs
3 c. plain flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vinegar
1 c. buttermilk
2 c. sugar
ICING:
3 heaping Tbsp. cornstarch
1 1/2 c. water
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 sticks margarine, softened
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. nuts, chopped

CAKE: Cream crisco, butter, and sugar. Add cocoa, coloring and vanilla. Beat well. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat until light and fluffy. Pour flour into sifter; add baking powder and salt. Sift once. Add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture. Dissolve soda and vinegar together; fold into batter last. Makes 3 layers.
ICING: Cook cornstarch and water. Set aside to cool. When mixture is cold, place in mixing bowl with sugar, margarine, and vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy. Add 1 cup nuts. Icing for 3-layer cake.
