Ingredients: 1 c. butter 1 c. shortening (or 2 cups butter) 1 c. brown sugar 2 c. white sugar 4 eggs 6 1/2 c. flour 1 tbsp. cream of tartar 2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 c. milk

Directions:Cream butter and sugars together till smooth and fluffy. Stir in unbeaten eggs, one at a time while mixing. Sift dry ingredients together. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Mix thoroughly. Store in tightly covered container for up to 6 weeks. Bake on greased cookie sheet in 375 degrees oven 10 to 15 minutes. Do not over bake. TO MAKE GUMDROP COOKIES: Mix 1 cup cookie dough with 1/2 cup gumdrops, cut fine. Shape in 24 balls and crisscross with fork. Bake. TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COOKIES: Mix 1 c. cookie dough with 1 tbsp. cocoa and 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces. Shape in about 2 doz. round balls. Bake. TO MAKE COCONUT COOKIES: Knead into 1 c. cookie dough 1 c. flaked coconut and 1/4 tsp. almond extract. Shape into 24 balls. Place on greased baking sheet. Press flat with spatula. TO MAKE GINGER COOKIES: Stir 1 tbsp. dark molasses and 1/4 tsp. ginger into 1 c. cookie dough. Shape into 24 balls. dip finger occasionally in water so dough does not stick to hands. Bake TO MAKE BANANA COOKIES: Stir 1/4 c. mashed banana, 1/2 tsp. grated lemon rind and 1/4 tsp. lemon juice into 1 cup cookie dough. Drop 1 tsp. at a time into finely rolled cornflakes. Coat by gently turning with spoon as dough is very soft. Bake on greased baking sheet. Watch closely when baking. TO MAKE ORANGE COOKIES: Stir 1/4 c. grated orange rind and 1/4 c. sugar mixed with 4 tsp. orange juice into 1 c. dough. Drop cookies on cookie sheet and bake. |
