1/2 lb. of dates
1 cup water
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp. lemon juice.

Base:
1 1/4 cups oatmeal
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening (Melted)
1/2 cup butter (Melted)
1/2 tsp. soda

Method:
Melt shortening and butter together. Dissolve soda in a little boiling water, add to oatmeal and flour mixture, then add the melted butter and shortening, mix together. Spread half of the oatmeal mixture in a 8x8 pan, then add the date mixture and rest of the oatmeal mixture on top. Bake 325 oven till edges are slightly brown. Excellent squares, this recipe comes from a dear friend who died a few years ago, she was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain. God bless Helen.
