3/4 cup soft shortening(Crisco), 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1 egg, 1/4 cup molasses(not dark), 2 1/4 cups flour, 2 tsp soda, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp cloves, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp ginger.

Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses thoroughly with table mixer if available, can use hand mixer but a little trickier especially if recipe is doubled. Blend dry ingredients and mix in. Chill approximately 2 hours. Sometimes I Chill over night if not in hurry. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll dough into balls size of large walnut. Roll ball in sugar. Place 2-3 inches apart on a greased (little Crisco on paper towel, rub all over bottom of pan) baking sheet. Bake 8-10 min. I usually take out when cookies start to show little splits on top, usually 8 min is good. Cookies will firm up as cools in pan 1-2 min before moving to wire rack. Seal in closed container to store after cookies cooled.
