1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
4 egg yolks, well beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
3 c. flour, sifted
3 T. baking powder
1 c. milk
4 egg whites, well beaten (not stiff)

CHOCOLATE PASTE:
1/4 c. cocoa
1/2 sugar plus enough warm water to make a stiff paste

Directions:

Cream butter, salt and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Add sugar gradually until well mixed. Add beaten egg yolks and mix thoroughly. Sift flour with baking powder 3 times, add to batter alternately with milk, starting and ending with flour. Fold in egg whites. In a separate bowl, combine ingredients for chocolate paste. Take 1/3 of batter and add chocolate paste. Put 1/2 of remaining batter into well greased tube pan. Put chocolate mixture on top. Then, add remaining batter to pan. Run knife through the batter. Put in oven and bake at 350 degrees for 1 to 1-1/2 hrs.
