2 1/2 c all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp each cinnamon, cloves and ginger
1 c butter
1 1/2 c granulated sugar*
1 egg

*Variation
1 c sugar
1/2 c molasses

1/2 c sugar in small bowl for rolling dough


Directions:
Directions:
Stir together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and ginger. In large bowl, cream together butter, sugar and egg; gradually add dry ingredients, mixing well.
Shape dough into roll 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in waxed paper and chill for 1 hour or overnight.
Cut dough into 1/8 inch thick slices, roll into balls, then roll into sugar, place on greased cookies sheet about 1 inch apart.
You can press with fork for crispier cookies or leave in balls.
Bake in 375ºF oven for 5-8 minutes.
