Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 c. flour (sift only once, then measure and take out 4 T. OR 2 c. cake flour)
3 t. baking powder
1 1/2 t. salt
4 T. shortening
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
4 sq. unsweetened chocolate melted and cooled
1 1/2 c. milk
1 t. vanilla extract
1/2 -1 c chopped walnuts ( if desired) toss with a small amount of flour

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, salt and baking power together and set aside. While creaming shortening (low setting on electric mixer), add sugar gradually, then cream in eggs, then melted chocolate. Add a small amount of the flour mixture, allow the mixer to incorporate it, then add a small amount of the milk. Repeat alternately until all the flour and milk are added and creamed in. Turn up mixer to medium speed and beat just enough to make everything smooth ( a few seconds, don't overbeat). Blend in vanilla and stir in floured nuts, if desired. Pour into a greased, floured 9x13 pan. Bake 40 to 45 minutes at 350 degrees or until toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm without frosting, or with chocolate sauce drizzled over it.

Chocolate sauce:
1/2 c. corn syrup
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
3 sq. unsweetened chocolate
1 t. vanilla extract
1 c. evaporated milk
Combine syrup, sugar and water; heat stirring constantly, to soft ball stage (205 degree on candy thermometer). Add vanilla, then very slowly add the evaporated milk, mixing well. Cool. Makes 2 1/2 c.
