3/4 C shortening
1 C brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 C molasses
21/4 C flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger

Directions:
Directions:
Mix thoroughly first 4 ingredients. Sift together remaining dry ingredient and add to the first ingredients. Chill dough. Roll into balls the size of large walnuts. Dip tops in sugar. Place, sugar side up, 3" apart on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle each cookie with 2-3 drops of water to create a crackled surface. Bake just until set but not hard. 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

We found this in my grandma's Betty Crocker cookbook from the 50's. The kids loved them as kids and still ask for them.
